Shabby Road: Cross Councillors
News this week that the Abbey Road studios may be up for sale has led to a flurry of lame press coverage over-using the Beatles pedestrian crossing “iconic image” nonsense.
What of our innovative creative local councillors? Would any of them resort to an unoriginal and tired cliche?  Oh… yes you bet!
Above we see the famous pose re-enacted by Cllrs William Hobhouse and Andrew Abbott to celebrate the new Norden Road crossing - although they had to round up a couple of local residents to make up the numbers.

This attempt by members of Eccleshall Parish Council is very poor - they are even walking in the wrong direction… although No 1 in line seems to be making a be-whiskered reference to “I am the Walrus”

Here we see Crewkerne Cllr John Dyke making a solo attempt - what happened to the other Fab Three Cllr Dyke?

Ohh… here they are three Islington Councillors Cllr Paula Belford, Cllr Barbara Smith and Cllr Lucy Watt… but the angles are all wrong! (Update: the middle person is actually PPC Bridget Fox, not Cllr Barbara Smith. Thanks to Cllr Lucy Watt for info)

This smaller image shows Central Bedfordshire highways officers Barry Wardle and Basil Jackson (far left and right) who were roped in to assist Cllr Brian Spurr and Cllr Roy Johnstone celebrate a new pedestrian crossing.

This is not an exclusively UK phenomenon - elected officials from across the planet have jumped on the bandwaggon. Here we see Cllr Cameron Granger from the Australian City of Greater Geelong leading a bizzare fashion parade.

But the clear winner is Mayor Peter Kelly and Premier Darrell Dexter from Halifax, Canada. Note the exemplary attention to detail; Paul is barefoot and carrying a cigarette (lax health and safety there Councillor!)
Whilst the image is celebrated around the world the elected representative responsible for the area where the original crossing is located has issued a glum call for it to be painted over. Cllr Lindsey Hall, representing the Abbey Road ward, said:“Maybe it is time to end this once and for all” Hmmm … yes maybe it is indeed!
