In the Bleak Midwinter
So this is Christmas…and let’s celebrate the festive season in style with another trip to the London Borough of Haringey - the spiritual home of the Glum Councillors blog where all the fun began back in the summer.
Here we see Cllr Rachel Allison and Cllr Bob Hare despondently rocking around the council-supplied Christmas tree which was intented to provide “Christmas cheer” however the £150 tree (which cost £1,500 to erect!) is reported to be “tipped to one side like an office worker at the close of his Christmas party.”
Haringey Council have defended their festive policy - amongst a long winded explanation the statement: “Most residents I have spoken to are very happy with the tree” was delivered straight-faced by the Cabinet member for community cohesion and involvement. (Yes that’s right: Christmas decorations are the responsibility of the Cabinet member for community cohesion and involvement).
Perhaps a few people in Haringey have been having a well-deserved tipple at their Christmas parties!
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all readers … and especially to all Glum Councillors. Why not resolve to cheer up in 2010?
